1. Make a pilot hole on the surface of your project. Never drill a screw into a solid surface. To drill a pilot hole, use a drill bit that is one size smaller than the actual screw size. Then, drill all the way down to where you intend to insert your screw.
Use a drill bit one size larger than the screw head if you want your screw to be flush with the board. Drill only approximately 18 inch (0.32 cm) into the wood.
2. Insert the screw through the hole. Insert the screw into the pilot hole with a drill or a screwdriver. For softer woods and delicate applications, like as antique furniture, a screwdriver is preferable. For hardwood and metal, use a drill.
3. Check that the screw is completely buried into the pilot hole. You won’t obtain an accurate measurement if your screw isn’t fully inserted. Check that the screw is securely fastened. The screw head should be level with or slightly below the surface of your object.
Drill carefully; if you peel the screw, it will be nearly impossible to remove.
4. Examine the backside of your project to determine if the screw is protruding. Examine the opposite side of your project’s surface. If you can see or feel the tip of the screw coming out, the screw is too long and must be trimmed to fit. You don’t need to remove the screw from the surface; instead, use a wire stripper to cut it right there. 
Cutting the Screw
1. Align the printed side of the wire remover with the screw. Wire strippers feature one side with dimensions and one side that is blank. The sharper end of the blade is on the side with measurements, thus cut with the screw put into the printed side. The tip of the screw should protrude from the blank side. 
If you wish to strip screws, you’ll need a high-quality wire stripper. Lower quality pairs, particularly those offered in tool sets, are insufficient for the purpose.
2. Find the appropriate hole size on your wire remover. Wire strippers come in a variety of hole diameters. Choose one that snugly fits your screw but does not require it to be driven in. If the hole is too large, the screw may simply bend rather than be cut. You won’t be able to obtain a tight cut if it’s too little. 
3. Apply pressure to the project surface with the wire remover. Slide the wire stripper over the screw until the printed side is flush with the underside of your project surface. The screw tip and the wire remover should be on the same side of the surface. 
4. Squeeze the wire stripper until the screw’s head pops off. To cut the screw, tightly press the wire remover until the end of the screw falls out. It’s fine to pinch the wire remover a few times, but avoid jiggling it. You’ll end up with a crooked cut. 
If you’re having difficulties cutting the screw, squeeze the wire strippers three or four times. If you’re not making any headway, go on to the next smaller hole.
Finishing the Screw
1. Remove any extra screw length. If you can cut the screw again, go ahead and do it! It’s permissible to make a second cut if certain wire strippers are difficult to line up properly with a surface.
If you’re having trouble getting to the rear of the screw with your wire strippers, try a reciprocating saw with a long bimetal blade. The saw will cut with a smooth edge and no sharp edges.
2. The screw’s tip should be sanded down (optional). If the remaining screw tip is approximately level with the surface but still a touch rough, smooth it off using a sander and coarse paper. Sandpaper with a grit of 40 to 50 should suffice. Sharp edges might harm a sander, so use caution. 
- If you don’t have a sander, try sanding a sanding block with heavy duty sandpaper (the sort with a material backing). It’s a good idea to run it over the screw tip a couple times. 
- It’s easier to sand down several screws with a grinder or drill with a grinding tip. This will save you time and effort.
3. For longer screws, add a nut (optional). If you can’t reduce a longer length of screw any more, use a nut with the same thread size to keep it in place and prevent snagging. Simply use a wrench to keep it snugly in place. 
Screw end caps, also known as thread coverings, are an option. Because they are soft and flexible, they are easy to slide over the exposed end of your screw.
