Tracing Your Drawing
1. Place a piece of tracing paper over the sketch or picture to be traced. The less complicated the picture, the easier it will be to trace. Make sure the tracing paper completely covers the picture.
2. Tape the tracing paper in place using masking tape. Fold the tracing paper’s edges over the edges of the original sketch or picture and tape them down. Tape the corners of the tracing paper to the front of the other page if it is smaller than the piece of paper you’re tracing over.
3. Using a graphite pencil, trace the original picture onto the tracing paper. You won’t be able to transfer your traced picture onto another piece of paper if you use a pen, marker, or colored pencil. With the pencil, carefully trace the lines of the original artwork. Don’t be concerned with tracing the shading from the source picture. Simply trace all of the lines from the original picture onto the tracing paper.
- If the tracing paper moves while you’re working, use the lines you’ve previously drawn to reposition it.
- Errors should be erased using a soft eraser to avoid tearing the tracing paper.
4. Take off the tracing paper. Remove the tape keeping the tracing paper in place, and position the sheet of tracing paper next to the original picture. Examine the two side by side. They should have the same appearance (except for any shading and coloring). If you realize that you missed a location, reposition the tracing paper over the original design and trace over the line you missed.
Transferring Your Drawing
1. Choose a surface on which you wish to transfer your traced artwork. Use a piece of sketchbook paper, watercolor paper, a canvas, or any other media that will allow the pencil to show through. Make sure you move the traced design to a light-colored surface so the pencil shines through.
2. Tape your traced design down on your new medium, facing down. Masking tape or office tape might be used. Place the tracing paper so that the traced design is aligned with the area you want it to transfer to. The tracing paper side you drew on should be facing down.
3. To transfer the traced artwork to the medium underneath, rub the back of it. Make a mark with a pencil, the end of a marker, or similar hard item. Rub over all of the lines in your traced design with pressure. The graphite on the opposite side of the tracing paper will transfer to the medium underneath it as a result of the pressure.
4. Take off the tracing paper. Remove the tape and lay aside the tracing paper. A fading copy of the drawing you traced on the new medium should be there. If any locations did not transfer, fill them in with a pencil.
5. Complete your transferred drawing. Make the lines more distinct by going over them with the pencil. When you’re completed, you may either leave it alone or improve it with ink, colored pencil, or paint.
